Fall in Pennsylvania means cooler mornings, shorter days, football, hoodies, and pumpkin everything. But it also means something we don’t talk about nearly enough: less sunshine and potentially less vitamin D.
At Infuzed IV Bar, vitamin D is something we pay attention to all year long, but especially as we head into fall and winter.
If you notice that you feel a little more tired, sluggish, or just not quite yourself once the days get shorter, it may be worth checking your vitamin D level.
Why Does Vitamin D Drop in the Colder Months?
Our bodies are pretty amazing. When our skin is exposed to sunlight, specifically UVB rays, we can actually produce vitamin D.
The problem?
Once fall and winter hit, we’re spending a lot less time outside. The days get shorter, we’re bundled up when we do go outside, and here in Pennsylvania, sunshine can sometimes feel like a rare commodity!
All of that can make it harder to maintain healthy vitamin D levels from sunlight alone.
And if your vitamin D was already on the lower side going into fall, those long winter months aren’t necessarily going to help.
Why Is Vitamin D So Important?
Vitamin D is probably best known for helping our bodies absorb calcium and supporting healthy bones, but its job doesn’t stop there.
Vitamin D also plays an important role in:
- Supporting normal immune function
- Maintaining healthy bones and teeth
- Supporting normal muscle function
- Helping with calcium absorption
- Supporting overall health and wellness
That’s why we don’t like to overlook vitamin D especially during cold and flu season when everyone is already thinking about supporting their immune system.
How Do I Know If My Vitamin D Is Low?
Here’s the tricky part: you may not know.
Some people with low vitamin D don’t notice anything at all. Others may experience things like fatigue, muscle weakness or aches, bone discomfort, or simply feeling run down.
Those symptoms can also be caused by many other things, so we don’t recommend assuming vitamin D is the problem.
Check it. Don’t guess.
A simple blood test can tell you where your vitamin D level actually stands.
What If My Vitamin D Is Low?
Depending on your level and your individual health needs, your provider may recommend dietary changes, an oral vitamin D supplement, or another form of supplementation.
At Infuzed IV Bar, we also offer Vitamin D3 injections, including a 50,000 IU injection when medically appropriate.
For some patients, an injection can be a convenient alternative to remembering another oral supplement, particularly when a provider determines injectable vitamin D is appropriate.
And yes—50,000 IU sounds like a lot because it is a high dose.
That’s exactly why we don’t believe in a “one size fits all” approach. Vitamin D is fat-soluble and excessive amounts can build up in the body. Your dose and how often you receive it should be based on your health history, medications, other supplements you’re taking, and your vitamin D level when testing is indicated.
More isn’t always better. The goal is getting YOUR level where it needs to be.
Fall Is a Great Time to Check Your Vitamin D
We spend a lot of time preparing for fall and winter. We get the furnace ready, put away the patio furniture, buy the kids new coats, and stock up for cold and flu season.
Maybe it’s time to put checking your vitamin D on that fall checklist too.
At Infuzed, we make it easy.
If you’re wondering where your vitamin D level stands, ask us about Vitamin D testing and our 50,000 IU Vitamin D3 injections. Our team can help determine what makes sense for you.
